Minimally Invasive Therapies Turn My Condition Better

I’m Lie Berty Handy, 60 years old, from Surabaya, Indonesia. In 2014, I was diagnosed with gastrointestinal stromal tumor and took minimally invasive treatments at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou, including interventional therapy, cryotherapy, microwave ablation, biological immunotherapy and photodynamic therapy. Now, my gastric tumor has shrunk from 14 cm to 9cm, and metastatic liver tumor has gone. I’m in good condition now.

I especially love playing tennis so much that I must play three times every week. One day in Sep., 2014, I played tennis as usual, but suddenly I felt abodmen pain and distention, which made me so curious since it never happened before. Therefore, I went to have check-up at local hospital. Ultrasound and CT scan showed there was a lump in my stomach, making me associate with stomach cancer.

The local doctor advised me to be hospitalized, but I refused. My aunt recommended me Surabaya Office of St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou where the oncologist offered consultation. She got liver cancer before and after one course of minimally invasive treatment at this hospital, she became cancer free and got very good theraputic effect. Subsequently, I came to office and asked the doctor whether my disease can be treated or not. He answered me “yes”, so I determined to take treatment at this hospital in Guangzhou.

In Oct. 2014, I arrived at St. Stamford Modern Cancer Hospital Guangzhou. After thorough check-up, I confirmed the lump was gastrointestinal stromal tumor, 14 cm big. On hearing that, I was scared and worried, but with encouragement from my families, I accepted it. Multidisciplinary team customized comprehensive minimally invasive treatments for me and treated me immediately. The fisrt treatment was interventional therapy that gave me more confidence in this hospital and technologies here since the gastric tumor shrank after it. Sooner, my worry and anxity were gone. And, in Feb. 2016, it was amazing that I came back here for follow-up after cryotherapy and found out the tumor shrank by 5 cm. In addition, there was a metastastic tumor in my liver before but it has disappeared.

It’s my sixth time to be here for treatment. Previously, I came here every 3 months; now, every half year. So far, I have received inteventional therapy, cryotherapy, microwave ablation, biological immunotherapy and photodynamic therapy. They are really minimally invasive treatments without any side effects for me. My tumor has shrunk and symptoms have disappeared. Everytime I finish the treatments and go back to Indonesia, I have normal life and work, especially play tennis as I used to do. My friends said I wasn’t like a cancer patient at all. What I hope are that good news continues to come and my gastric tumor disappears soon completely.

Compared with hospitals in Indonesia, treatment techniques here are advanced and there is a medical team to take care of me instead of only one medical staff. I am so greatful to my attandant doctor Lin Jing who is very responsible and nice. Besides, services here are also very good. The hospital often organizes activities for patients to go outside for relexation. I went on the Pearl River Cruise before. During hospitalization, I love cooking Indonesian food here.

I want to tell other cancer patients to be strong and keep taking treatment. Please don’t give up!

How We Treat Cancer?

Interventional Therapy

Interventional Therapy is a new substitute of traditional chemotherapy, which means that a physician introduces instruments such as needles or catheters (long, thin tubes) into the body through tiny(1-2 mm) incisions in the skin. The instruments are then guided by an imaging technique called fluoroscopy to the cancer tumor. In this way, the physician can deliver cancer medicine directly to the tumor.more info

Cryotherapy Therapy

Cryotherapy Therapy, also known as “Argon-Helium Knife Cryotherapy”, is a new substitute of traditional physical therapy. Practically speaking it is “extreme cold + extreme heat” cancer treatment. Generally, a minimum of 10-15 minutes is required to achieve an extreme analgesic (pain relieving) effect while lowering the temperature to the injured area, thus reducing the metabolic rate and swelling associated with tissue injury.more info

Particle Knife

Particle Knife is a new substitute of traditional radiation therapy. With the help of computer Treatment Planning System (TPS), radioactive particles will be implanted into tumors. The particles which release γ-rays can continuously kill tumor and cause destruction targeting tumor cells. With time, the radiation amount would accumulate to be large enough to destroy the DNA double strands of tumor cells.more info
